The soup tasted excellent. The ripe tomatoes, the particular basil variety gifted by a neighbour, the cool spell that had prevented the tomatoes over-ripening at the vine - none of these factors were in the cook's control. But by the time the compliments arrived, all of that receded. What remained was a clear sense that the result reflected the cook's talent.
This is a small, almost harmless version of the illusion of skill. In higher-stakes domains - investing, entrepreneurship, strategic leadership - the same mechanism runs at far greater cost.
What the Illusion Actually Is
The illusion of skill is the tendency to overestimate the role of personal ability and underestimate the influence of chance in determining outcomes. It is not a simple matter of arrogance. It is a structural feature of how attribution works.
When outcomes are good, the mind assigns credit to internal factors: skill, effort, judgment, preparation. When outcomes are bad, it reassigns blame to external factors: bad timing, bad luck, circumstances beyond control. This asymmetry is not conscious calculation - it is automatic, and it runs in the same direction for almost everyone.
The result is a systematically inflated sense of control. The skill that "caused" the good outcomes is remembered, reinforced, and used to predict future performance. The luck that contributed to them is edited out.
The Mechanism Behind the Illusion
Two cognitive tendencies combine to produce this effect.
The first is self-serving attribution bias: the tendency to credit internal factors when things go well and blame external factors when things go badly. This protects self-esteem and maintains motivation, which is useful - but it also systematically misrepresents the actual causes of outcomes.
The second is pattern-seeking. The human brain is strongly motivated to find narratives that make outcomes feel predictable. A series of successful decisions looks, in retrospect, like evidence of a reliable judgment process. The possibility that the sequence reflected random variation - that a different sequence of random events would have produced different outcomes even with identical decisions - is not intuitively compelling. Stories make sense; distributions of probability do not.
Where the Illusion Is Strongest
The illusion of skill is most powerful in domains where luck plays a substantial role in individual outcomes.
In these domains, the illusion of skill leads individuals to overestimate their control over outcomes. In fields where chance is substantial - areas such as venture capital or financial trading - long-term performance tends to be more poorly predicted by past skill alone than practitioners typically believe.
This does not mean skill is irrelevant in these fields. It means the signal from skill is embedded in much larger variation from chance, and the two are extremely difficult to separate from the inside. A good run of results can reflect either genuine ability or fortunate randomness - or, most commonly, a mixture of both that cannot be precisely attributed.
The expert who attributes early success entirely to skill, and plans future strategy accordingly, will tend to take excessive risk, prepare inadequately for reversals, and misallocate resources in proportion to their overconfidence.
The Myth Worth Examining
A common belief is that success is solely a product of talent and hard work. This belief is motivationally valuable and partially true - effort and skill genuinely matter. But it runs into difficulty when applied as a universal explanation, because it predicts a pattern that does not consistently appear in the data.
If outcomes in a given domain were primarily driven by skill, the most skilled practitioners would consistently outperform less skilled ones. In domains with high luck components, this consistency is much harder to demonstrate. Performance fluctuates more than skill levels do. The practitioners who do best in any given period are not always the same ones across periods.
The illusion of skill makes it hard to notice this, because the mind is already primed to credit skill when outcomes are good - and not to look too carefully at the counterfactual.

Lena thinks her willpower keeps her scrolling under ten minutes a day, but a week with few alerts makes her feel skilled, while a week with many alerts leads to relapse, which she blames on bad luck instead of the app's changing notification pattern.
Scenario
Lena sets a daily limit of ten minutes on her go-to social app. During the first week the app's notification batching test delivers about two push alerts each day, so she stays under the limit and tells herself her strong self-control is the reason. In the second week the test ends and the algorithm raises the average to about eight alerts per day, pulling her into longer sessions each time she checks a badge. She feels frustrated and says the week was just bad luck, that the alerts were unusually distracting, and that her skill remains unchanged. She never considers that the shifting alert pattern, not her willpower, drove the difference in outcomes.
Where The Bias Enters
Lena credits her successful low-use days to personal skill and attributes her high-use days to bad luck, overlooking that the variability in alert frequency is produced by the app's experimental notification batching feature rather than her own ability.
Decision Check
When reviewing a day's screen-time result, ask: how much did the changing number of alerts influence my scrolling versus my own intention?
