A new smartphone arrived with one standout specification: it could reach 50% charge in fifteen minutes. The advertisement led with this. The buyer noticed it immediately. By the time a purchase decision was made, this single present feature had taken on considerable weight.

What was not in the advertisement: the battery lasted only a few hours under typical use. The camera produced grainy images in anything less than ideal lighting. These were real features of the same device - they simply were not present in the pitch. They were absences.

After a day of travel, the battery had died by mid-afternoon. The low-light photos were unusable. The buyer's initial judgment - formed around the fast-charge feature - had stayed anchored long after the missing information would have changed it.

This is the feature-positive effect.

What It Is

The feature-positive effect is a cognitive bias in which people assign greater importance to the presence of a feature than to its absence when making judgments or decisions.

It is not that absent information is deliberately ignored. It is that absence lacks the perceptual salience of presence. Present features are concrete, memorable, and easy to encode. Absent features must be actively noticed - and the mind rarely goes looking for what is not there.

The result is that arguments built around what exists ("this supplement reduces inflammation") tend to be more persuasive than arguments built around what doesn't happen ("not taking this supplement leads to a higher risk of chronic inflammation"). The underlying information may be equivalent. The psychological weight is not.

Why Presence Gets Priority

The mechanism is attentional. The brain is calibrated to respond to stimuli that are present, visible, and salient. Absent features carry no perceptual signal - they require the person evaluating information to actively construct the scenario of what is missing.

This construction is effortful and often does not happen automatically. Especially under time pressure or cognitive load, evaluation tends to operate on available, present information rather than the more demanding task of identifying and weighing what has been left out.

Absent features also occupy less space in memory. After reviewing a product, a service, or a candidate, people tend to recall the features they noticed. What they did not see leaves less trace. When recall is used to form a later judgment - as it often is - the absent information has further eroded.

Where the Effect Shows Up

Product and service evaluation. Any pitch, review, or advertisement leads with features. The features that are highlighted become the primary input to the judgment, regardless of what equally relevant features were omitted.

Public health messaging. Campaigns structured around what happens if you engage in a risk behaviour ("smoking causes lung cancer") tend to be perceived as more compelling than equivalent messages structured around what happens if you avoid it ("not smoking leads to a life free of lung cancer"). The present risk is more cognitively available than the absent harm.

Checklists and audits. When reviewing a document, a system, or a plan, the items that are present receive attention. Missing items - the things that should be there but are not - require an active effort to notice that something expected is absent.

Personal judgments. When evaluating whether someone is competent, trustworthy, or suitable, the features you have observed dominate. The features you have not had the opportunity to observe - which might include failure modes, weaknesses, or contraindications - tend not to enter the calculation.

The Misunderstanding to Correct

A common reading of this effect is that people simply ignore absences. That is too strong. People can and do weigh absent information when they are specifically directed to look for it. The bias is not absolute; it is a weighting asymmetry.

The practical implication is that the asymmetry is systematic: the same information presented as present tends to carry more weight than the same information presented as absent. This means that how information is framed - not just what information is present - substantially affects judgment.

After the meeting, the team uses a simple checklist: each reviewer writes down one present strength and one missing qualification for the role, then discusses how each could affect client outcomes. Where The Bias Enters

The manager's attention was drawn to the salient, present feature of Maya's on-time delivery, while the absent feature of negotiation experience lacked perceptual salience and was not recalled during the evaluation.
