Right after studying, both may feel prepared. A week later, the difference appears. The student who returned to the material repeatedly is more likely to retrieve it.

The spacing effect is the finding that information is often remembered better when exposures are distributed across time rather than massed together in one short period.
The practical version is simple: four short reviews spread across several days usually create more durable memory than one long review of the same total length. This does not mean cramming never works. Cramming can help short-term performance. The spacing effect matters when the goal is retention after a delay.
How the Mechanism Works
Spacing helps because the learner has to retrieve the material after some forgetting has begun. That slight difficulty is useful. When recall succeeds after a delay, the memory trace is strengthened and the learner gets a clearer signal about what is actually known.
Spacing can also vary the context around learning. Studying at different times, moods, or settings may create additional retrieval cues. The material is no longer attached to only one narrow study episode.
Massed practice can feel fluent because the material is still warm in memory. That fluency is seductive. It creates the impression of learning, but it may partly reflect temporary familiarity rather than durable recall.

The biggest misunderstanding is that spacing is just studying less. It is not. Spacing changes the timing of study, not the seriousness of it.
A second misunderstanding is that all intervals are equally useful. If the gap is too short, the review may be too easy. If the gap is too long, recall may fail completely. The useful interval is the one that makes retrieval effortful but still possible.
