Simple Logic is a cognitive bias where intuitive, fast thinking (System¯1) leads to incorrect answers on problems that require reflective, effortful reasoning (System¯2), as illustrated by the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT).

A Scene Worth Recognising

You see a shirt and a hat on sale for a total of $150. The tag says the shirt costs exactly $100 more than the hat. Your first guess might be that the hat costs $50 and the shirt $100, because the numbers seem to split evenly. But if the hat were $50, the shirt would be $150, making the total $200. Setting the hat price as x gives the shirt as x+100, so x + (x+100) = 150 → 2x = 50 → x = 25. The hat is the hat and $125 the shirt. The quick answer feels right but needs a moment of calculation.

What it means and how it works

The bias stems from dual‑process cognition: System 1 operates automatically and quickly, using heuristics that often yield ‘good enough’ answers. System 2 is slower, effortful, and engages in analytic checking. When a problem triggers a strong intuitive response, System 2 may not be engaged, leading to the intuitive but erroneous answer. Factors that increase reliance on System 1 include cognitive load, time pressure, and affective states.

In Rolf Dobelli’s book The Art of Thinking Clearly, Chapter 63 (‘Simple Logic’) describes how people often rely on gut‑level intuitions that feel correct but are wrong when a problem demands deeper analysis. The classic illustration is the three‑question CRT developed by Shane Frederick (2005). Intuitive answers (10 ¢, 100 minutes, 24 days) are quickly generated but incorrect; the correct answers (5 ¢, 5 minutes, 47 days) require pausing to check the logic. This bias reflects the tendency to accept the first plausible solution without verifying it, especially under time pressure or when the problem seems trivial.

Before confirming the order she could write down the component costs, add them, and compare the sum to her intuitive price, or ask a teammate to verify the arithmetic.
