You're in a team meeting. The agenda is structured: each person shares a brief update, clockwise around the table. There are eight people. You're fifth.

By the time the fourth person finishes their update, you've already heard from three others, and you retained most of what they said - the project delay, the client concern, the revised budget. But the fourth person's update? The one delivered thirty seconds before you began speaking? You'd be hard-pressed to repeat more than a sentence of it.

It's not that the fourth person said anything forgettable. It's that while they were speaking, you were already thinking about what you were going to say.

That memory gap - specific to the person immediately before your turn - is called the next-in-line effect.

What the Next-in-Line Effect Means

The next-in-line effect describes a consistent pattern in group turn-taking: when speaking order is predetermined, people have significantly lower recall for whatever was said by the person immediately before their own turn compared to what was said earlier or later in the sequence.

The effect is specific and somewhat counterintuitive. You'd expect that the most recent speaker - the one whose words are freshest in time - would be easiest to remember. In structured turn-taking situations, the opposite is true. The last thing you hear before you speak is often the thing you remember least.

How It Works: The Mechanism

The mechanism is attentional capture. When you know your turn is coming, your working memory is already partially allocated: you are monitoring the conversation while simultaneously rehearsing what you will say, managing anxiety about delivery, and tracking the moment when you'll need to begin.

This creates a cognitive bottleneck in the moment before your turn. There is simply less capacity available for encoding what the previous speaker is saying. It is not a hearing problem - you can hear them clearly - but the material is processed more shallowly and is therefore less durably stored.

This is confirmed by the relationship between cognitive load and effect size: the next-in-line effect grows stronger when the response being prepared is more complex, and shrinks when the speaking order is unpredictable. If you don't know when your turn is coming, you have no particular reason to start preparing while someone else is still speaking, and your recall of the preceding speech improves.

The effect is not evenly distributed across the sequence. Speakers who preceded earlier parts of your turn - the second or third speaker when you're sixth - are remembered more clearly than the one who spoke just before you. The temporal proximity to your turn is what triggers the cognitive offloading, not temporal distance from the start of the sequence.

Why This Matters

The practical costs of the next-in-line effect are highest in situations where what is said immediately before your contribution is most relevant to your contribution.

In meetings and team discussions, the person who speaks before you may raise a point that directly addresses or complicates what you're about to say. If you miss it - because you were busy preparing your own point - you may respond to an outdated version of the conversation, or make a claim that the previous speaker already covered or qualified.

In classrooms and training sessions, students who are asked to speak in sequence typically have the lowest retention of the instruction or discussion that happened just before their turn. This affects comprehension and the quality of responses.

In any structured dialogue, participants with low recall of the preceding speaker have less ability to build on what was said. Discussions become less cumulative: each person responds to what they remember, which may be an older version of the conversation than they realise.

The Common Misunderstanding

The most common misunderstanding about the next-in-line effect is that it reflects inattention or lack of interest. The person who doesn't remember what was said right before them is assumed to have been distracted, unengaged, or focused on their phone.

But the effect is driven by a normal, automatic process - the cognitive system prioritising the preparation of a near-future output over the encoding of a current input. It is not a failure of character. It is a structural limitation of how attention and working memory share capacity.

The second misunderstanding is that it affects all preceding speakers equally. It doesn't. The effect is concentrated on the immediately preceding speaker. Memory for all other speakers in the sequence is substantially better. The pattern is specific, which is what makes it identifiable as a distinct cognitive phenomenon rather than general inattention.
