By the time he put his phone down, he had spent a couple of hours reading about a purchase he had already made, a phone he had no intention of returning, for a decision that was closed. The additional information changed nothing. It just left him slightly restless about a choice that had been fine.
This is information bias: the tendency to seek information even when it cannot affect action or improve decision outcomes.
What It Is
Information bias is the tendency to gather more data than is needed for a decision - persisting in information-seeking past the point where the new information can change what you will do. It stems from a reasonable instinct (more information should lead to better decisions) applied past its useful limit.
The bias is rooted in a misunderstanding of the value of information. Information has value when it could change a decision or an action. Once a decision is made and cannot be changed, or once the relevant options are fully distinguished by existing data, additional information adds no decision value - even though it feels like it should.
How the Mechanism Works
Two cognitive patterns converge:
More data equals more certainty. The mind treats information quantity as a proxy for confidence. Gathering more feels like reducing uncertainty, even when the uncertainty has already been resolved or is not the kind that additional reading can address.
Regret prevention. There is a fear of missing the one critical piece of information that might change everything. This drives continued searching even after the search has become redundant - not because the information is expected to be decisive, but because stopping feels like a risk.
Both patterns are rational in their domain. The problem is that they continue to operate after the decision point has passed, applying decision-making mode to a situation that is no longer a decision.
A Decision in Context
After purchasing a mid-range smartphone, David felt curious about whether he had missed a better deal. He spent the evening reading forum threads, watching unboxing videos, and scanning spec sheets for every model released in the past year. He noted tiny differences in camera megapixels and battery capacity, even though he already owned the phone and had no intention of returning it. The additional information did not alter his ownership or usage; it only prolonged his screen time and left him feeling restless about a choice that was already settled.
David's behaviour is not irrational in its individual steps - checking reviews, comparing specs - only in its timing and context. Each step feels like due diligence. Cumulatively, they produce effort with zero decision value.
Where It Shows Up
In pre-decision research that goes past usefulness. Searching for additional options after an initial satisfactory choice has been identified does not reliably improve the final decision - it more often produces choice overload or post-decision anxiety.
In clinical and diagnostic settings. When faced with a scenario where a diagnosis is already highly probable and where treatment would be identical regardless of diagnostic refinement, there is a tendency to request additional tests anyway. The desire to reduce residual uncertainty drives testing even when the tests cannot change the care pathway.
In professional analysis. Prolonged data collection before a report, a presentation, or a recommendation can delay the output without improving the quality of the insight. The marginal value of the additional analysis is often lower than the cost of the delay.
The Common Misunderstanding
Information bias is sometimes confused with thoroughness or conscientiousness. The distinction is in whether the additional information could change the decision or action. Gathering information before a decision is usually rational; gathering information after a decision is closed, or beyond the point where new inputs can differentiate between the available options, is the pattern the bias describes.
A second misunderstanding: more information always improves decision quality. Beyond a certain threshold, extra information reduces decision quality by producing overload, increasing complexity, and creating a false sense that the decision is still unresolved when it has already been resolved by earlier data.

The delay pushes the release date back and frustrates the engineering team.
Where The Bias Enters
Maya believes that more data will increase certainty and reduce regret, even though the decision is already set and cannot be changed by additional facts.

Before seeking more information, ask whether any new fact could change the go/no-go decision. If the answer is no, stop gathering data and move forward.
