What it means and how it works
The illusion arises from a reliance on superficial cues such as familiarity or ease of processing (fluency heuristic), which are mistaken for deep understanding. Metacognitive monitoring fails to detect the gap because the feeling of understanding is generated before any effortful explanation is required.
