A product manager says the recommendation system is easy to understand: it shows people more of what they like. Then an engineer asks for the steps between a click and the next recommendation. Which signals count? How are they weighted? What prevents a feedback loop? The confident summary gives way to gaps that were invisible until an explanation was required.
What it means and how it works
The illusion arises from a reliance on superficial cues such as familiarity or ease of processing (fluency heuristic), which are mistaken for deep understanding. When individuals attempt to explain a system, the lack of detailed causal knowledge becomes evident, breaking the illusion. Metacognitive monitoring fails to detect the gap because the feeling of understanding is generated before any effortful explanation is required.
People often feel they have a deep understanding of complex systems (e.g., a zipper, a toilet, or a political policy) until they are asked to generate a step-by-step explanation. At that point, gaps in knowledge become apparent, revealing that the initial sense of understanding was superficial.
