A committee reaches a decision. It is easy to read the result as a statement of what everyone on the committee wanted. The result may instead reflect a voting rule, a deadline, a veto, or a constraint that left little room to choose.
That mistaken leap is the classic group attribution error. In its original research sense, it means inferring members' attitudes from a collective decision while giving too little weight to the process that produced it. The Hello to Halo catalog also includes a related inference in the other direction: treating one member's characteristics as evidence about the whole group. Both routes can support an inaccurate group judgment, but they come from separate lines of research.
Saturday was the only workable date
Imagine a volunteer committee planning a neighborhood festival. It announces that the event will take place on Saturday. A neighbor assumes every committee member preferred Saturday. In fact, the venue could supply power only that day, and several members had argued for Friday.
Later, one committee member sends a blunt scheduling message. The neighbor begins describing the entire committee as hostile.
This is an illustrative hypothetical, not a reported case. Its first inference runs from a constrained group outcome to presumed member preferences. Its second runs from one member's behavior to a judgment about the wider group. Before accepting either conclusion, the neighbor would need information that the announcement and the message do not provide.
The classic effect starts with a group decision
Scott Allison and David Messick introduced the term in a 1985 paper containing five experiments. Across their decision scenarios, a group's outcome affected estimates of its members' attitudes even when observers also received information about the decision rule, the level of support, or another relevant constraint. The outcome was treated as more representative of individual preferences than the evidence justified.
Later experiments help explain why this can happen. When a result was explicitly stated, rather than worked out from the other information, participants made stronger outcome-to-attitude inferences. The effect was also stronger for decisions with lower personal relevance, and memory for the outcome predicted more correspondent judgments. Those findings support an outcome-as-cue account; they do not establish one mechanism that operates in every setting. Allison, Worth, and King reported those conditions in 1990.
The decision itself may sometimes be informative. A unanimous voluntary choice can tell us more about member preferences than an outcome produced by a narrow rule or an external constraint. The error lies in overlooking that difference, not in learning anything at all from a group result.
A separate route starts with one member
The catalog's broader definition also covers generalizing from an individual member or a small sample to the group. This route has its own evidence base.
In Hamill, Wilson, and Nisbett's 1980 experiments, vivid information about one person shifted attitudes toward a wider population even when the case was described as atypical. The authors' conclusion was narrower than a rule that people always ignore representativeness: their setup paired a vivid case with relatively pallid information about sample bias.
Quattrone and Jones tested a related member-to-group inference with members of rival university groups. Participants' estimates of the wider group's choices followed an observed member's choice more strongly for an outgroup than for an ingroup, especially when prior expectations were weak. This result connects perceived group uniformity with generalization, but it does not show that the error is limited to outgroups.
The distinction matters. Allison and Messick's named effect begins with a collective decision and asks what it seems to reveal about the members. The adjacent route begins with a member and asks what that person seems to reveal about the group. One paper did not establish both routes, and their boundary conditions are not interchangeable.
How a thin inference can become a group impression
Follow-up studies show how an outcome-based inference can make a group look more uniform than the evidence warrants. In three experiments, changed group outcomes produced an impression that group attitudes had changed even though the proportion supporting the position stayed roughly constant. Outcome-based attitude judgments were also associated with lower perceived variability within the group. Mackie and Allison reported those results in 1987.
Other experiments found that outcome-biased judgments of a target sample sometimes carried into judgments of the wider category. The evidence was bounded: one generalization was weak, and the effects did not fully reverse prior stereotypes. The careful conclusion is that a limited example or a misleading outcome can shape or reinforce a simplified group impression under some studied conditions. It does not follow that this process creates every stereotype or predicts every downstream decision. The 1992 experiments describe those limits.
Much of the direct evidence cited here comes from controlled studies and decision vignettes published in the 1980s and early 1990s. Relevance, whether the target is an ingroup or outgroup, prior expectations, and how the information is presented can change the result. In one experiment, participants inferred correspondence between the decision and voters' attitudes only when the decision had no immediate consequences for the group. Worth, Allison, and Messick reported that boundary in 1987. The research does not support treating group attribution error as universal, culturally invariant, or inevitable.
What group attribution error is not
Fundamental attribution error or correspondence bias concerns an individual's behavior: an observer infers a stable disposition while underweighting the situation. Group attribution error works at a different level, such as inferring members' preferences from a collective outcome. The two share a family resemblance because both can neglect constraints, but they are not synonyms. Gilbert and Malone review the individual-level construct.
Outgroup homogeneity bias concerns perceived variation within a group. It can make member-to-group generalization easier, but measuring perceived sameness is different from measuring the inference itself. A meta-analysis found only a small average tendency to see more variability in an ingroup, with results varying by measure, group status, and context. Boldry, Gaertner, and Quinn summarize that evidence.
Ultimate attribution error concerns group-serving explanations for positive and negative behavior by ingroups and outgroups. It is a pattern of causal explanation, not the claim that a group decision expresses every member's view. Pettigrew introduced that attribution account in 1979.
Groupthink concerns the process inside a decision-making group. Group attribution error concerns what an observer infers from a group outcome or a limited sample. A constrained decision can be misread even when groupthink played no part in producing it. Janis's foundational account examined the decision process within policy-making groups.
A practical decision check
First identify what your conclusion starts from.
If it starts from a group outcome, ask:
- What rule converted individual positions into this result?
- What constraints narrowed the available choices?
- Do I know how the members' views were distributed, including dissent?
If it starts from one member or a small sample, ask:
- How was this person or sample selected?
- What evidence shows that the case is representative?
- What do I know about variation inside the group?
These questions are aligned with the missing evidence in the studies, but they are not a proven cure. A warning that one case is atypical did not always erase its influence. The check is useful because it forces the inference to show its bridge: decision rule, member distribution, sample quality, or within-group variation.
A group result can tell you what happened. By itself, it cannot tell you what every member wanted. One person can tell you something about that person. By itself, that observation cannot describe an entire group.
