You decide to look into a particular car model - just out of curiosity. Two days later you see them everywhere: on your commute, in car parks, passing you on the motorway. You mention this to a friend. "I swear there are so many more of these on the road than there used to be."

There aren't. What changed is not the number of cars. What changed is your attention system.

This is the frequency illusion - also known as the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon: the tendency to notice something far more often after it has been brought to your attention, leading to the belief that it occurs more frequently than it actually does.

What the Frequency Illusion Is

The frequency illusion describes a gap between perceived prevalence and actual prevalence. After an initial encounter with a stimulus - a word, a concept, a brand, an idea - the brain's attentional filters become calibrated to detect it. Each subsequent encounter registers consciously. The impression is of a dramatic increase in occurrence.

The occurrence hasn't increased. After initial exposure to a stimulus, individuals report a higher perceived frequency of that stimulus even when its actual presence in the environment is unchanged. The illusion is in the perception, not the world.

How the Mechanism Works

Two cognitive processes interact to produce the effect.

Selective attention. The brain does not process everything equally. Once a stimulus has been flagged as recently relevant, attentional systems prioritise its detection. Instances that would previously have gone unregistered now break through into conscious notice. The car was always there; the mental filter that would catch it has now been installed.

Confirmation bias. Once the pattern is noticed, subsequent encounters reinforce the impression of increased frequency. Each sighting feels like evidence. The sightings that don't happen - the moments the car isn't there - don't register as counter-evidence, because absence is harder to perceive than presence. The result is a lopsided sample that feels representative.

Together these processes produce the illusion: the stimulus appears to have multiplied when only the attention has shifted.

A Recognisable Scenario

A manager begins reading about a particular leadership concept. Within the following week, they encounter references to it in a podcast, a colleague's email, and a report they're reviewing. It feels like the idea is suddenly everywhere in the professional conversation. They mention at a team meeting that this concept seems to be gaining real traction right now.

In reality, the concept has been circulating for months. The podcast episode was recorded weeks ago. The report was written before they read about the concept. None of these occurrences are new - only the manager's awareness of the concept is new. The frequency illusion has taken what was always present and made it feel like an emerging trend.

Why It Matters

The frequency illusion can distort judgments about trends, risks, and popularity. When a consumer hears about a competitor's product twice in a week, it can feel like market momentum - when it may be coincidence amplified by fresh attention. When someone newly aware of a health symptom starts noticing references to it everywhere, the perceived prevalence can produce disproportionate anxiety.

In professional settings, mistaking the frequency illusion for genuine signal can lead to premature pivots, over-responses to anecdote, and misallocation of resources toward patterns that aren't actually there.

The Common Misunderstanding

The frequency illusion is sometimes described as a memory error - as if encountering something repeatedly causes you to falsely remember seeing it before. It is not primarily a memory phenomenon. It is an attentional bias: the stimulus was present before; it was simply not being tracked. The error is in the inference drawn from noticing it - concluding that its presence has increased rather than that your awareness of it has.

The Baader-Meinhof label comes from the name of a German group that gave the phenomenon its informal name when someone noticed references to it appearing "suddenly" after first hearing about it. The pattern is the same regardless of the stimulus.
