Every Friday night the Martinez family orders pizza for dinner. The next morning they all feel unusually lively and attribute their boost to the pizza. They start buying extra cheese slices, convinced it fuels their weekend chores. What they overlook is that Friday evenings are when they finally relax after a busy week, allowing them to sleep in on Saturday. The extra rest, not the pizza, explains their morning vigor. Their belief that pizza directly creates energy shows how a coincidental sequence can be mistaken for cause.
What it means and how it works
The mind uses heuristics such as the narrative fallacy and the availability heuristic to create simple cause‑and‑effect stories. When two events are salient and occur near each other in time, the brain fills the gap with a causal narrative, especially when motivated to find meaning or control.
Humans are pattern‑seeking creatures; we quickly look for explanations for observations even when the link is coincidental. This bias leads us to treat correlation or temporal contiguity as proof of causation, ignoring alternative explanations, confounding variables, or the possibility that the observed effect is actually causing the presumed cause.
Why it matters
Mistaking correlation for causation can lead to ineffective policies, wasted resources, and flawed personal decisions. In medicine, business, and public policy, acting on false causal beliefs may exacerbate problems rather than solve them.

In a leadership review Alex presented the meeting as the cause of the improvement, decided to keep the stand-up and even added a second check-in later in the day, allocating extra team time to these meetings. After the tool update stabilized, the completion rate leveled off despite the additional meetings, revealing that the earlier gain stemmed from the tool change, not the meeting routine.
Where The Bias Enters
The mind links the temporal proximity of the new meeting and the improved outcomes, treating the sequence as proof of causation while overlooking the concurrent software update as a confounding variable.
Decision Check
Before crediting the meeting for the outcome, compare periods with and without the tool update, ask the team which changes they felt helped, and consider running a simple trial where the meeting is paused while the tool remains active to see if the effect persists.
