Traffic in the downtown area had been getting worse for months. When residents were asked about the cause, most pointed to the same thing: the recently installed bike lane. The lane had reduced available car space on a key arterial road. The connection felt obvious. The cause felt identified.
But the congestion had also coincided with a major road construction project a few blocks away. Delivery vehicle traffic had increased substantially as online shopping grew. A temporary detour was funnelling cars from a parallel street onto the same road. Each of these was a real contributing factor. Together they probably explained more of the congestion than the bike lane did.
Yet the bike lane - the most visible, most discussed, most recent change - absorbed most of the explanatory weight. The other factors barely entered the conversation.
This is the fallacy of the single cause.
What It Is
The fallacy of the single cause is the error of attributing a complex event to a single factor, ignoring the multiple contributing factors that actually produced it. It does not require that the identified cause is false - the bike lane may well have contributed to traffic. The error is treating it as the cause when it was, at most, one of several.
The fallacy tends to follow a recognisable pattern: a complex outcome occurs; one highly visible or emotionally salient factor is identified; that factor receives explanatory credit for the whole outcome; the search for contributing factors stops.
Why the Mind Prefers Single Causes
The bias arises from cognitive tendencies that favour simplicity and coherent narrative.
A single cause creates a clear story: this happened because of that. The story is easy to remember, easy to communicate, and satisfying in the way that good explanations are supposed to be satisfying. A network of interacting factors does not produce this clarity. It produces a web of partial contributions, feedback loops, and conditional relationships that is harder to hold in mind and harder to act on.
Attentional limits compound the tendency. The mind focuses on salient, visible, or recently changed factors and allocates less attention to background conditions that have been present for longer or that are less visible. The bike lane was new. The delivery traffic increase had been gradual. The construction project was a few blocks away. The most recent and most visible factor attracted the most cognitive attention.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
When a complex problem is attributed to a single cause, the response tends to address that one cause. If the single-cause diagnosis is wrong - or even only partially right - the intervention is likely to fall short.
Remove the bike lane and if the other contributing factors are not addressed, the congestion may barely change. The solution will seem to have failed. A more sophisticated analysis would have identified multiple levers and designed responses accordingly.
Relying on a single-cause explanation can lead to flawed decision-making and ineffective problem-solving because it overlooks necessary interventions that address the full set of causes.
This applies in many contexts: attributing a team's underperformance entirely to one person's behaviour, attributing a health outcome entirely to one lifestyle factor, attributing an organisation's failure entirely to a leadership decision made at the peak of the crisis. In each case, the narrative is plausible, memorable, and likely incomplete.
The Misreading to Watch For
One common misunderstanding is that identifying a cause requires identifying the cause. In reality, most outcomes in human and social contexts are multi-causal - produced by the interaction of multiple factors, no one of which was sufficient on its own. Identifying a contributing cause is genuinely useful. Treating it as the complete explanation is the fallacy.
Another misreading is that this fallacy only applies to negative events. It applies equally to positive outcomes. A business's success, a policy's effectiveness, a team's strong performance - all of these are typically produced by multiple interacting factors. Attributing them to a single cause (a particular leader, a single decision, a defining product feature) produces the same kind of distorted picture as attributing failures to single causes.

In reality, the price rise that day also reflected a broader rally in growth stocks, lower interest-rate expectations, and a wave of retail buying driven by social-media chatter. By focusing on the single product news, Maya ignores these concurrent factors.
Where The Bias Enters
The bias occurs because a vivid, concrete story is easier to process than a diffuse set of influences, leading the mind to latch onto the salient cause and downplay less noticeable contributors.
Decision Check
Before acting on a single piece of news, ask what other market conditions, investor sentiment, or macro trends might be moving the price at the same time.
