After something intense, everything that follows feels mild by comparison â not because it is, but because the brain recalibrated the scale.
The contrast effect is a cognitive bias where the perception of a stimulus is altered by the presence of a preceding or simultaneous contrasting stimulus, making the target seem more extreme in the opposite direction.

After finishing a bowl of heavily salted soup, Luis grabbed a slice of plain bread to cleanse his palate.
