Contagion bias is the tendency to believe that an object or person can acquire immaterial qualities (such as evil or goodness) through mere contact, leading to irrational avoidance or preference.
A Scene Worth Recognising
When Luis discovers that a coffee mug he likes at a thrift store was previously used by a famous singer he admires, he feels a sudden urge to buy it, even though the mug is ordinary ceramic. He imagines that holding the same cup might transfer some of the artistās talent or charm to him. Despite knowing that no physical trace remains, the mere idea of contact with someone he regards positively makes the mug feel special. This illustrates contagion bias, where positive associations attached to an object through prior contact influence desire and valuation.
What it means and how it works
The mind applies a 'law of contagion' heuristic: if A has touched B, then B inherits some of A's properties. This heuristic is linked to essentialist thinking and moral contamination intuitions, producing feelings of 'taint' or 'blessing' that persist despite rational knowledge of the object's actual state.
This bias stems from intuitive, magicalāthinking heuristics where people treat contact as a transfer of essence. Even when an object is objectively unchanged (e.g., cleaned, sterilized), the mere history of contact with a valued or devalued source can trigger strong emotional reactionsāapproach for positive contacts, avoidance for negative ones.
