She had not been tired. The photographs were taken in similar conditions. What had changed was the context.
Surrounded by other faces, her individual features had been processed as part of a group average - and that group average made each face, including hers, appear closer to symmetry and balance. The effect was not social. It was visual.
What It Is
The cheerleader effect is the perceptual tendency for individual faces to receive higher attractiveness ratings when presented in a group than when presented in isolation. A person who appears average alone may appear more attractive when flanked by other people.
This effect is consistent: individual faces receive higher attractiveness ratings when presented in a group of faces compared to when presented in isolation. It applies across a wide range of baseline attractiveness - it is not limited to already-attractive people. And it operates through a visual mechanism, not through personality inference or social warmth.
The Mechanism: Visual Averaging
When the visual system takes in a group of faces simultaneously, it automatically computes something like an average of the features present. This averaging is not deliberate - it happens below conscious awareness as part of how the visual system handles sets of similar objects.
The result is that each individual face is perceived as slightly closer to the group average than it actually is. The group average, as a composite, tends toward greater symmetry and evenness than most individual faces. Because symmetrical, even features are generally perceived as more attractive, each face in the group benefits from being mentally nudged toward that average.
This is the cheerleader effect: a modest but consistent attractiveness boost that comes not from any quality of the individual but from the averaging process applied to the group.
What the Effect Is Not

Hiring and first impressions. When candidates are reviewed collectively - a panel presentation, a group meeting - each participant may be perceived as slightly more competent or appealing than they would appear evaluated alone. Sequential solo evaluations, all else equal, would yield slightly lower scores.
Marketing and brand imagery. Depicting a product alongside groups of people - rather than a single individual - can benefit from the attractiveness boost applied to each group member, which may transfer in part to the associated product or brand.
